Combining ripe, dark fruit and sweet earthiness, the 2007 Richard Sauret Zinfandel opens with layers of black currant, dried plum and molasses, with a hint of shaved truffle. The rich, jammy fruit melts across the middle, developing brightness on the back of the palate, with lifted elements of currant, five-spice and white cracked pepper. The Zinfandel shows its face in the wine, adding a solid tannic grip to the big structure and bold finish. The meaty flavors of this wine pair nicely with similarly styled food, such as a braised leg of lamb.
